Tips for Choosing a Life Jacket

When engaging in water sports, people should wear a suitable personal flotation device (PFD). With many different types of PFDs, the most appropriate device will depend on the type of sport and the conditions of the water.
Type I - Designed to keep an unconscious person afloat, these life jackets are intended for water sports taking place in rougher waters or remote areas. Also known as offshore jackets, they are bulkier than other types, but can help regulate body temperature in the water.
Type II - A thinner, lighter version of the Type I, Type II jackets are suitable for nearshore activities like fishing and sailing. Type II jackets come in inflatable and inherently buoyant models.
Standard PFD - Best for sports like paddleboarding and kayaking, standard PFDs, or Type III jackets, do not need to be inflated. Generally the most comfortable jackets, they allow a wider range of movement.
